HEALING OUR CONNECTIONS,
HEALING OURSELVES

Restoring our Loving Connections
through Transformative
Personal and Social Healing

Welcome to Healing Our Connections, Healing Ourselves, the HCHO Project.   HCHO provides resources, action steps, and inspiration to help you participate in the transformative healing we need, both as individuals and in our larger society and culture.   The HCHO Project is inspired by the principles that:

  • Love supports our well-being.
  • Lack of love harms our well-being.
  • Because we can suffer lack of love both personally and also at the societal scale, we need both personal and societal healing.

CONNECTING PERSONAL AND SOCIAL HEALING
HCHO promotes a 3-level, biological-psychological-social approach
to personal and social healing and transformation,
that we call “Social Brain Healing.”

We are born with a Social Brain and the innate ability to create loving connections with the people and the world around us.   Love supports our well-being — physically, emotionally, socially, and more.

But personal and societal-scale Stress and Trauma prevent our ability to connect lovingly, and instead subject us to lack of love, distorted personal relationships, and social systems that harm our well-being — for example, by generating Us-vs-Them divisions, hierarchies of Winners/Losers, and other abusive, harmful personal and social relationships.

Because we can suffer lack of love both personally and at the societal scale, we need both personal and social healing.

THE 3 GIFTS OF SOCIAL BRAIN HEALING
The biological-psychological-social approach of Social Brain Healing promotes
both individual, internal change —healing within our own mind/body/brain/emotions —
and also external, larger social healing and transformation
in our relationships, communities, and larger society and culture.
Social Brain Healing works at each of these levels to create the 3 Gifts of Social Brain Healing.

•  Because Chronic Stress harms our well-being and restricts our capacity for love, Social Brain Healing can help us recover from Chronic Stress, by restoring and expanding our brain's abilities for loving connections and creative growth.

•  Because the stories we learn about who we are and what is possible can harm our well-being and restrict our ability to connect lovingly, Social Brain Healing helps us learn new stories that increase our love, well-being, and empowerment, expand our potentials, and offer us new possibilities.

•  Because the relationships we experience and see around us can harm our well-being and restrict our ability to create loving connections, Social Brain Healing helps us transform our relationships (both personal and in the larger world around us) so we can experience more love, more empowerment, and greater physical, mental-emotional, social, economic, environmental, and spiritual well-being.

You can give these 3 Gifts to yourself.
You can give these 3 Gifts to other people.
And by so doing, you are helping bring these 3 Gifts to the larger world.

SIX DIMENSIONS OF WELL-BEING
HCHO is guided by our vision of personal and social healing which restores each person's well-being in multiple dimensions, such as:

  • Physical well-being— including food, shelter, good health, and freedom from physical abuse and violence.
  • Mental-Emotional well-being— being able to feel that the world is a safe place; being able to express yourself, developing and expressing your unique gifts and talents; being able to use all of your brain's abilities to learn, be creative, and grow; and being able to feel that your life is meaningful and fulfilling.
  • Social well-being— knowing that other people respect you for who you are, and that your life is filled with loving, caring, supportive relationships.
  • Economic well-being— that everyone can have the economic resources they need, such as education, money, and supportive work; that you have some control over your working conditions, your work does not cause physical or emotional harm, and you have plenty of time for the rest of your life.
  • Environmental well-being— that you can live in and interact with a clean, healthy, abundant, and beautiful natural environment.
  • Spiritual well-being— feeling that your life has meaning and purpose, that we are connected to something larger than ourselves, that we are all here to help each other, and that we can both give and receive loving support.
